We live within a mile of what could be the best lochan for waterlilies in Scotland, so waterlilies have become a bit of an obsession. The paintings are done almost entirely 'en plein air' and can be a bit of a challenge due to the hebridean weather. Each painting has probably narrowly escaped blowing into the loch in what is termed 'a wee breeze' . It will also have been visited by west highland midges, clegs (horse flies and the odd more welcome dragonfly. But please don't let this put you off.

The best thing about the hebridean coast is the colour. If it was a bit warmer, you could be in the Caribbean, Grey would surely be more logical than the fabulous turquoise we often get, much to the amazement of new visitors. For me, it's the power and the colours which make the waves irresistible to paint.

The Sea Loch wears many different faces. Sometimes, it is a pale minty-grey with wild storm waves. On fine days, it can be the azure blue of a butterfly's wing. But my favourite, is when the inky dark loch and skies contrast with bright yellow, sunlit hillsides, as in this first painting of sunshine after a storm.

The islands of North West Scotland are home to a unique crofting landscape, rich in history and tradition. Peat is still dug. It is used to heat homes and it adds unique flavour to the water used in whisky distillation. Lazy beds are still very much evident everywhere, together with more modern poly tunnels and poly grubs.

Despite harsh conditions, the Outer Hebrides is a rich habitat for all sorts of wildlife and croft animals. Often these creatures are shy and illusive, but when you are greeted with a glimpse, it is something truly special that stays with you.
